Guru, teachers, maestros 07-02-2014

T he translation of the guru's function into our Occidental culture is almost impossible and maybe not advisable. It is probably more accurate to talk about spiritual teachers instead. A great yogini asked me some interesting questions in regards to this delicate subject and  here I try to give simple answers: What is the role of the spiritual teacher in the XXI century? Is it necessary to find one if I want to awaken fully? and Where do I find him/her?

My yoga classes often start with a beautiful chant with an opening verse that says " I bow to the inner Light, who is the true teacher" because the guru is always inside, even when things get quite dark. The teacher outside teaches you the practices and disciplines to find the light within yourself. The desire to undertake such task is yours as well as the work that it takes since nobody can walk your path better than yourself. For a long time we gave other people the power to guide our inner life but that approach doesn't serve us anymore. It is time now to activate your inner potential, to start the flame within your heart and to grow under the luminosity of its presence. You have the power, the courage and the sensitivity to succeed joyfully.

He/She reminds you of your own greatness and reflects the virtues that already exists in your soul (he/she is your biggest fan!) so you don't forget, so you can have a reference that will invite the highest dreams into your life. Those virtues exude from his/her Self as the purest of the fragrances. You will recognize the love, bliss, joy, compassion, trust, peace, valor, celebration or wisdom, and those will also expand from you.

Finding an outer teacher is not an indispensable requisite in the context of the 21st century, but my goodness, it helps so much!! There are parts of the path that will be uphill, at times you will encounter karmic burdens that require a transformation and liberation, other moments the chatty mind will make discernment quite challenging and you will probably go through stretches where you haven't been before and you might get scared. In those moments, the outer teacher holds your hand, protects you with his/her love and reminds you of who you truly are.

T rasladar la función del guru a nuestra cultura occidental es casi imposible y a lo mejor hasta poco recomendable. Probablemente sea más acertado hablar de maestro/a espiritual. Una gran yogini me hizo unas preguntas interesantes al respecto y aquí intento responder con la mayor sencillez: ¿Cuál es el papel del maestro espiritual en el siglo XXI? ¿es necesario encontrar uno para despertar? ¿dónde lo encuentro?

Mis clases de yoga suelen comenzar con un canto muy hermoso cuyo primer verso dice ‚ÄúMe inclino ante la Luz interior, que es la verdadera maestra‚Äù pues el guru siempre, siempre está dentro, incluso cuando las cosas se ponen de lo más oscuras. El maestro/a de afuera te enseña las prácticas y la disciplina para encontrar la luz en tu interior. El deseo de hacerlo es tuyo y el trabajo también porque nadie puede andar tu camino mejor que tú mismo. Durante mucho tiempo les dimos a otras personas el poder de ser guías en nuestra vida interior, pero eso ya no nos sirve. Ahora son tiempos de activar tu propio potencial, de encender la llama en tu propio corazón y de crecer iluminado por su presencia. Tú tienes el poder, la valentía y la sensibilidad para llevarlo a cabo con éxito.

√âl o ella te recuerda tu grandeza y refleja las virtudes que ya existen en tu propia alma (¡es tu fan número uno!), para que no te olvides, para que tengas un referente de que hasta los sueños más elevados son posibles. Esas virtudes emanan de su Ser como las fragancias más puras. Reconocerás su dicha, alegría, confianza, compasión, paz, valor, celebración o sabiduría, y también se expandirán en ti.

Encontrar un maestro externo no es requisito imprescindible en el contexto espiritual del s. XXI, pero ¡ayuda muchísimo!¬† Hay partes del camino que se hacen muy cuesta arriba. A veces se te presentan cargas kármicas que debes transformar y soltar, otras es difícil discernir con tanta cháchara de la mente y en otros momentos avanzas por parajes que nunca antes has visitado y te asustas. Entonces el maestro/a exterior te coge de la mano, te protege con su amor, te escucha y te recuerda quién eres auténticamente.

Ante mis maestros, dentro y fuera, me inclino.
